Billboard goes K-Pop today (Aug. 25) with the launch of a new chart, the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100. The tally, which ranks Korea’s top-selling songs, kicks off with girl group Sistar‘s “So Cool” grabbing the No. 1 slot and  beating out second-place Leesang and 2NE1, who land not only at No. 3 (with “Ugly”) but also No. 14 (“Hate You”) and No. 21 (“I Am The Best”) on the chart dated Sept. 3.

GO TO THE BILLBOARD K-POP HOT 100
The Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart, launched in conjunction with Billboard Korea, is based on digital sales via leading websites as well as downloads from mobile service sites using an industry-standard formula and the most credible music data sources within Korea. The K-Pop Hot 100 debuts simultaneously here on Billboard.com, in the international chart section of Billboard.biz, in Billboard magazine, and also on Billboard Korea’s website, billboard.co.kr.

“The launch of the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart is a milestone event, as it will provide the Korean music market with what we believe is Korea’s most accurate and relevant song ranking,” says Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard’s Director of Charts. “We’re excited to be expanding Billboard’s globally recognized Hot 100 chart franchise into this country, and look forward to enhancing the K-Pop Hot 100 chart in the near future with additional data as well as creating new charts that showcase the breadth of Korean music.”

Meanwhile the artists dominating the top of the inaugural Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 reflect the fact that hit-making girl groups are a top attraction in Korean music. Sistar and 2NE1 are just two examples. T-ara, made up of seven young ladies, has secured the No. 4 position as well as grabbing No. 73 (visit Billboard.biz soon for positions No. 51-100). Miss A, whose influential management company also manages the ever popular Wonder Girls, rounds out the top five with their single “Good-bye Baby.” Here’s a closer look at five of the female groups ruling the K-Pop 100 this week.

Sistar, “So Cool”

Sistar

Sistar has won over men and women (and more men) alike with their K-Pop dance track, “So Cool,” which is characterized by its intense beat.  The ladies sing about rising out of a bad breakup and ending up stronger than ever before and feeling “so cool” about themselves.  As you can see in the music video, Sistar’s appeal is not only in its music but also in its choreography. Though Sistar has just recently released its debut album, the girls’ sexy moves hint at dancing skills that will continue to win fans as they progress further into their career.

2ne1

2NE1, “Ugly”

2NE1

2NE1’s “Ugly” is an electronic dance track, a genre that the group has come to represent in Korea. Infused with electronic-infused rock guitar,  The song’s upbeat rhythm is contrasted by its morose, self-criticizing lyrics.  In it, 2NE1 sings and raps from the perspective of young teenage girls who are unsatisfied with their appearance and hate the fact that their “ugly” face prevents them from being loved. All five tracks of 2NE1’s second EP have been top digital sellers in Korea signaling the lasting appeal of these four vibrant young women.

T-ara “Roly-Poly”

T-ara

T-ara dials back to Korea of the 1980s with “Roly-Poly.”  The track’s repetitive melody even recalls a touch of the Bee Gees’ classic hit “Night Fever.”  As the seven girls dance on a retro nightclub stage, they sing about suddenly meeting with Mr. Right on the dance floor and chasing him down all night.  The “Roly-Poly” music video also has a short film as the intro … so you can fast forward to 4:20 to hear the song.

Miss-A, “Good-bye Baby”

Miss-A

Miss A’s hit song, “Good-bye Baby,” is a dance track that smoothly combines hip-hop and soul elements.  Park Jin Young, who produced Wonder Girl’s hit song “Nobody” (which landed in the U.S. Hot 100 in late 2009), wrote the lyrics and composed the music for “Good-bye Baby.” Miss-A sings a powerful chorus telling their cheating boyfriends to leave for good.  In the video, the four ladies saunter around their jet black leather dresses, giving a visual representation of this lyrical appeal for independence.  Miss-A, who has two members — Fei and Jia — of Chinese descent, also has a sizable fanbase in China.

Dalshabet, “Supa Dupa Diva”

Dalshabet

The six members of Dalshabet (which means ‘sweet sherbet’) have found great success with their third single, the disco-esque “Bling Bling”.  In the music video, the ladies move away from the innocent and sweet image that they portrayed for their first two single albums and emphasize their more playful, sexy side.  Dalshabet sings about meeting their ideal boy at a disco club and dancing the night away.

Who are the girl group members with the nicest legs?

SNSD has been extremely successful in both Japan and Korea, and their popularity can be attributed somewhat to their long, slender legs. However, there are other Korean artists who are also known for such desirable legs. In a survey done by dermatologists and plastic surgeons, the top five were chosen as follows:

1. UEE (After School)

She is known to be the master of “honey thighs”. As a former competitive swimmer, she has trained her leg muscles extensively. Unfortunately, she has recently been plagued with negative comments over her weight. Nevertheless, comments by the judges included: “Legs I want to touch”, “The balance between her torso length and leg length is perfect”, and “Her long calves are refreshing”.

2. Huh Gayoon (4minute)

By her fans, she is said to have ’subtle glamor’. Despite having a baby face, she has athletic legs.  The doctors agreed that she had “perfect leg lines” and “smooth calf muscles”.

3. Sooyoung (SNSD)

She has legs that don’t seem Asian. Sooyoung has received interest over her legs since she debuted. Having said that, many SNSD members are known for their legs, such as Seohyun, Jessica, and Tiffany. They said about Sooyoung though, “These are legs that do not need photoshop. Are these legs of an Asian?” and “Her smooth thighs don’t even have any trace of fat.”

4. Hyuna (4minute)

She gained a lot of male fans through her solo song, ‘Change‘, and her pelvic dance showcased her ideal legs. Comments included: “Her thigh lines are charming when she dances” and “Her thighs and calves have no trace of fat”.

5. Bora (Sistar)

Despite being around average height (165 cm), she has long slender legs. During the MBC Chusok special, ‘Idol Star Athletics Championships’, she won the 100m race and the nickname, ‘Boshain Bolt’. They commented, “She has golden ratio legs” and “The way her thighs, calves and ankles connect is flawless.”

What do you guys think?

Going against the current K-pop trend, D-day eschews digital and electronic sounds for strings and acoustic. The album comes with four new songs including the main track Haruga Michigo, whose music video co-stars Chuno’s Yoon Joo Hee.  This week it debuts at No. 20.

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2010 – October Week 3

1. (–) 2NE1 – 박수쳐 (Clap Your Hands) *** 3 WEEK NO. 1 ***
Score: 864
Genre: R&B/Hip-hop
External from soompi image Music+Lyrics: e.knock
Album: 2NE1 Vol. 1 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: 2NE1’s “Clap Your Hands” remains No. 1 for the third consecutive week.  This song is from their first full studio album “To Anyone”. The girls did well last year with their powerful charisma on stage and their showy fashion sense. 2NE1 will have three title tracks – “Can’t Nobody,” “Go Away,” and “Clap Your Hands” – that will be performed simultaneously for promotions, probably a first in Korean music that an album have three different title songs. Top producers, Teddy, e.knock, choice37, and PK among others have participated in the album to bring out strong hip-hop beats, R&B, as well as reggae.

2. (+23) Miss A – Breathe
Score: 740
Genre: Pop/Dance
External from soompi imageMusic+Lyrics: Park Jin Young
Album: Miss A 2nd single Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Moving up 23 big spots to No. 2 and almost certain to become the new No. 1 song next week is top rookie female group Miss A’s second single title song “Breathe”.  The girls who debuted this past July with much confidence and skill returns with a funkier and cuter image fans are expected to enjoy.  Their debut song “Bad Girl Good Girl” already topped the chart and now they are looking to add another No. 1 song.  Miss A will battle top male group CN Blue for this year’s top new artist honor.

3. (-1) Wheesung – 결혼까지 생각했어 (Even Thought Of Marriage)
Score: 700
Genre: R&B/Dance
External from soompi image Music: Kim Do Hoon / Lyrics: Wheesung
Album: Wheesung mini-album “Realslow Is Back” Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the title track of Whee Sung’s single album, ‘RealSlow is Back.’ This is a song where Whee Sung shows off his appeals to the fullest. It is a powerful R&B dance song with intense sounds, his explosive vocals, addictive melody and his signature straightforward yet sentimental lyrics. It is about a man who’s heartbroken after the woman he intended to marry leaves him. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

4. (New) Beast – (Breath) *** HOT SHOT DEBUT ***
Score: 693
Genre: Pop/Dance
External from soompi image Music+Lyrics: Choi Gyu Sung, Rado, Shin Sa Dong Tiger
Album: Beast mini-album “Mastermind” Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Not to be confused with Miss A’s ‘Breathe”, our highest debut this week is from fast rising boy group Beast.  The title song from their latest mini-album translated to English is “Breath”.  Beast has already excited fans with “Clenching Fists Tightly” released prior to its upcoming third mini album, “Mastermind.” They need to wait no longer as the boy group returns this month. The title track is “Breath” a new song that is expected to upgrade Beast one notch higher. The song was composed by Sinsadong Tiger and Choi Gyu Sung and Beast member, Yong Jun Hyung took part in penning it. The strong synth riffs and drums flow well with the group’s vocals and adlibs.  This week “Breath” becomes one of our highest debuts all year at No. 4.  We may be seeing two songs with almost the same English titles at the top two spots next week.

5. (-2) FT Island – 사랑 사랑 사랑 (Love Love Love)
